Machadodorp, also known by its official name eNtokozweni, is a small town situated near the edge of the escarpment in the Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The Elands River runs through the town. There is a natural radioactive spring here that is reputed to have powerful healing qualities. In early 2010 the town (along with Nelspruit and Waterval Boven) had its name officially changed. The hills around the town are terraced with thousands of stone walls which form part of a vast complex of settlements, fields and roads. Some tour guides describe these as South Africa’s “real” lost city. Archaeologists and historians have described the ruins as settlements of the baKoni people. Oral records and historical evidence trace the baKoni to at least the early 18th century. The ongoing 500 Year Initiative to rewrite South Africa’s history continues to deliver new insights into the extent and complexity of these settlements. An international group of researchers have placed the baKoni settlements in the context of numerous other cases of agricultural intensification, that took place in the precolonial era in different parts of Africa. Lanseria – Johannesburg
LODGE: aha LESEDI AFRICAN LODGE (Village stay)
To get the most out of Johannesburg, book overnight accommodation in Lanseria on the outskirts of the city centre. Lying in outer Randburg, Lanseria is virtually synonymous with the airport that lies out on this side of Johannesburg. What used to be little more than a slick executive airport for corporate travellers with their own jets, now hosts regular flights with Kulula to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.
Outdoor adventures abound in this part of Johannesburg too, and Croc City, the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve and the Lion Park are all based within easy reach of Lanseria. De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre, focuses on conserving the cheetah, many of which roam freely on commercial and communal farm land in South Africa, and, as a result, run into conflict with farmers. They don’t have the protection afforded those cheetah which live in national parks and reserves, and the centre works at resolving issues with farmers for the cheetah. A visit to the centre in the foothills of the Magaliesberg is a wonderful outing, particularly as it is so close to the Hartbeespoort Dam. aha Lesedi African Lodge and Cultural village is located in the heart of the African bushveld and rocky hills, in the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site, only 45 minutes’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. An enthralling opportunity to experience the mystical cultures and traditions of the people of Africa, and visit five traditional homesteads, each inhabited by Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele tribes who live according to tribal folklore and traditions of their ancestors. Accommodation is unique, and these traditionally styled rooms, give an insight into rural African lifestyles, while still enjoying all creature comforts. A gastronomic feast of traditional dishes from the far corners of Africa in its three-tiered restaurant, Nyama Choma, which means the Great African Feast, forms part of the cultural experience. Five Conference venues and African team building activities make Lesedi an ideal venue for corporate outings with a difference. Situated close to the Hartebeespoort dam, activities include game drives, walking trails, guided Anglo-Boer history tours, craft markets, horse-riding, and bird-watching. A scenic cableway ride to the top of Magaliesberg, an aquarium, bird-park and local zoo are in close proximity. The famous De Wildt Cheetah breeding farm is situated on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg.
